What Tacoma chimneys are actually like
The North End and Stadium District have chimneys older than almost anything else we work on. Tall, handsome, and often unlined, because they predate the requirement entirely. Those stacks are also the ones where matching the original soft mortar actually matters — get it wrong here and you take the chimney apart faster than the weather would have.
Tacoma also carries the legacy of ground movement. The 2001 Nisqually earthquake cracked a great many chimneys in this area, and a fair number were patched at the visible joint without anyone checking what the shaking did to the liner further up. That is a Level 2 question, and on a house of this age it is worth asking.
